Refugee Week 2021

As part of Refugee Week (14 – 20 June) a UK-wide festival celebrating the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees and people seeking sanctuary, Lanarkshire Carers is proud to share with you; Across the Waters, which is an online photographic exhibition to reminisce and share the life experiences of carers from refugee communities within Lanarkshire.

Every photo featured has been shared by refugee carers supported by Lanarkshire Carers. These photos are extremely precious and valuable to the carers who have shared them. For some, they are the only mementoes left of their lives, families and times that are no more.

The photos you will see are the only possessions that some of the lucky few were able to preserve through the destruction of war and the chaos of displacement. The majority of refugees had to leave without any of their valued and precious possessions.

Lanarkshire Carers is extremely privileged to be able to share these memories and give our thanks to the refugee carers who contributed photos and quotes to this video.

We would really appreciate your support by sharing this incredible video as far and wide as possible to promote Refugee Week and the struggles our refugee carers have been through.

As part of Refugee Week, we have also organised a Refugee to Citizen, Life in the UK presentation as a guide for refugee carers in their immigration journeys to becoming naturalized citizens of the UK.

Our BAME Carer Service & Equalities Coordinator, Isbah Khan was also invited to speak during Carers Week about her role and the services available for BAME carers in Lanarkshire on Bene McKinlay’s BB African News Magazine Show on Jambo! Radio, which is a radio station for people of African & Caribbean heritage in Scotland.

Lanarkshire Carers has worked with carers from refugee communities to collate a recipe book; Aromas- Dinner Menu, which is a selection of popular and easy to make recipes.
